Directing - Giving instructions for more appropriate use while inhibiting a habitual response. You learn how to direct yourself to let the neck release, to let the head balance forwards and up, to let the back lengthen and widen, etc. "Direction" can also refer to location in space, i.e., forwards, up, etc.
End-Gaining - Going for an end or goal with inadequate attention to the appropriate process or means for achieving that goal (one's use).
Habit - Learned reactions to circumstances, more or less unconscious and automatic.
Inhibiting - Delaying your reaction to a stimulus in order to direct yourself toward a different, hopefully more appropriate response to circumstances. Inhibiting and directing constitute "thinking in activity".
Means-Whereby Principle - Attention to process (use) as one goes toward an end.
Primary Control - The relationship between the head, neck, and back that exerts a major influence on our general use and functioning.
Sensory Appreciation - What we hear, see, taste, smell, feel, etc. ; our non-verbal perceptions. AT focuses on kinesthesia, our perception of use, which includes sense of limb position, muscular tension, movement, etc. What we experience ourselves as doing and what, in fact, we are doing are not the same. Our sensory appreciation may delete and distort a great deal. AT training develops more reliable and accurate sensory appreciation for better direction of use.
Use - The postural-movement pattern of an individual, part of a total pattern of behavior. How do you use yourself?
